How to Apply Hair Serum Without Greasy or Weighed-Down Hair

An educational guide from the Beauty AMZ research team. No hard sell, just what you need to know.
Why serum makes hair greasy
Greasy results come from three mistakes: too much product, wrong formula weight, or application too close to roots. Hair can only absorb a small amount of serum. Excess sits on the surface, attracting dust and looking oily. Fine hair shows over-application fastest. The fix is always the same: use less, choose lighter, stay on the ends.
The exact amount for your hair
Short or fine hair: 1 to 2 drops, no more. Medium length and density: 2 to 3 drops. Long or thick hair: 3 to 5 drops. Curly hair: err on the higher side since curls drink product. Start with the lower number always. It is easy to add a second drop to dry ends later. It is impossible to remove excess without rewashing.
Where to apply (and where never to)
Apply to mid-lengths and ends only, where hair is oldest and driest. Keep at least 3 inches from the scalp. The scalp produces its own oils and needs no serum. For bobs or short hair, focus on the very ends. Rubbing serum into roots is the number one cause of greasy, flat hair by midday.
The warm-and-press technique
Dispense serum into your palm and rub hands together for 5 seconds. Warming thins the formula for even distribution. Press palms over the hair surface rather than raking fingers through, which concentrates product in streaks. Work section by section on thick hair. Finish by smoothing any remaining residue over the very ends.
Layering serum with other products
Order matters. On damp hair: leave-in conditioner first, then heat protectant, then serum. Serum seals everything underneath. On dry hair: serum goes last as a finisher. Do not layer serum under heavy creams, which block absorption. Do not mix serum with oil in your palm, which creates an unpredictable heavy blend.
Fixing greasy over-application
If hair looks greasy after serum, blot ends with a dry microfiber towel to absorb excess. Dust a tiny amount of dry shampoo on the greasy sections. As a last resort, rinse ends with water and reapply a smaller amount. To prevent repeats, switch to a lighter formula or cut your amount in half. Fine hair rarely needs more than 2 drops.
