Eyeliner Techniques for Hooded and Mature Eyes That Work

An educational guide from the Beauty AMZ research team. No hard sell, just what you need to know.
Why hooded eyes need a different approach
Hooded eyes have extra skin that folds over the crease, hiding most of the lid when eyes are open. Standard winged liner tutorials assume a visible lid, so the wing disappears or transfers onto the hood. The fix is drawing with eyes open and placing the wing higher and more outward than usual. This keeps the line visible instead of swallowed by the fold.
The dot-and-connect wing method
Look straight into the mirror with eyes open and relaxed. Place a small dot where you want the wing tip, usually angling toward the end of your brow. Place a second dot at the outer corner of the eye. Connect the dots with short strokes, then fill in. This method works because you see the final placement as you draw, instead of guessing with eyes closed.
Tightlining for definition without lid space
When lid space is minimal, tightlining gives definition without using any lid real estate. Gently lift the upper lid and fill the waterline and lash base with a waterproof pencil. This makes lashes look denser and eyes more defined. It never transfers to the hood because it sits below the lash line. Pair with curled lashes and mascara for maximum effect.
Smudge-proofing your liner
Hooded eyes press liner against skin all day, so smudging is the main enemy. Start with eyeshadow primer from lash line to brow bone. Choose waterproof or long-wear formulas only. After applying liner, press matching eyeshadow over it with a small brush to set it. Finish with a light layer of translucent powder on the hood area where transfer happens.
Adapting for mature eyes
Mature lids are thinner and may have fine lines that catch liquid liner. Switch to pencil or gel formulas, which glide without skipping. Keep lines thinner than you think you need, since thick liner overwhelms smaller visible lids. Smudge the outer edge slightly with a brush for a softer look. Avoid lining the entire lower lash line, which can drag eyes down.
Common mistakes to fix
Stretching the lid while drawing is the top mistake. It distorts placement, so the wing lands wrong when skin relaxes. Drawing with eyes closed hides the hood, so always check with eyes open. Using non-waterproof formulas guarantees transfer by noon. Finally, making wings too thick eats up the little lid space you have. Thinner is better on hooded eyes.
