Scented Candle Guide: Wax Types, Scent Throw, and Safe Burns

An educational guide from the Beauty AMZ research team. No hard sell, just what you need to know.
How scented candles are made
A scented candle is wax, fragrance oil, and a wick in careful balance. The wax type determines burn characteristics: soy burns cool and long, paraffin burns hotter with stronger throw, beeswax burns longest with a natural honey scent of its own. Fragrance load, the percentage of scent oil, typically runs six to ten percent; more is not always better, as excess oil causes smoking and poor burning. The wick must match the jar diameter: too small and the candle tunnels, too large and it smokes. Quality shows in the balance of these three elements.
Wax types compared
Soy wax is the current mainstream favorite: renewable, clean-burning, good scent release, affordable. Coconut-soy blends burn even cleaner and are the premium standard. Beeswax is the natural luxury option with its own honey aroma, but it is expensive and holds fragrance less strongly. Paraffin, the traditional petroleum wax, offers excellent scent throw at low cost but produces more soot. Our picks use soy, the best all-around choice for most buyers and the easiest to burn well.
Getting the most from every candle
The first burn sets the candle's fate: melt edge to edge to prevent tunneling. Trim wicks to a quarter inch every time for a clean flame. Burn in still air away from vents and drafts. Limit sessions to four hours so the wick does not mushroom and the scent stays true. When the candle is done, clean the jar with hot soapy water and repurpose it; quality jars make excellent storage. Following these steps, a large jar can deliver sixty or more hours of fragrance instead of thirty.
Scent families and mood
Fragrance affects mood measurably. Citrus and bright notes energize and suit daytime living spaces. Vanilla and warm gourmands comfort and suit evenings and bedrooms. Florals uplift and suit spring and social spaces. Woody and earthy notes ground and suit studies and autumn. Honey sits warmly in the middle, blending with all of these, which is why honey candles are such safe gifts. Choose scents for the room's purpose and the time of day you use it most.
Candle safety essentials
Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep them away from children, pets, and flammable materials. Place on a heat-resistant surface, away from drafts that cause uneven burning. Do not burn for more than four hours at a time. Stop when half an inch of wax remains to prevent jar overheating. Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings and debris. These rules are simple and non-negotiable; nearly all candle accidents come from ignoring them.
When to replace and repurpose
Retire a candle at half an inch of wax to protect the jar and surfaces. Clean finished jars by pouring out warm wax, washing with hot soapy water, and removing wick stickers with oil. Quality jars become cotton pad holders, planters, or desk organizers. If a candle lost its scent, it may be old stock; fragrance fades over one to two years. Buy sizes you will burn within a year, and store unburned candles cool and dark to preserve their fragrance.
